Days Between Dates: Age, Tenure & Deadlines

Count days between dates correctly: exclusive vs inclusive counts, leap years, month lengths, and business days without a headache.

The short answer

Pick the right counting rule first: elapsed durations exclude the end date, while bookings and rentals include both endpoints. Then run the numbers in the Date Calculator, which shows exclusive days, inclusive days and weeks side by side.

For ages and anniversaries, the Age Calculator breaks any span into years, months and days with leap years and short months handled honestly. Everything computes locally — dates are never stored or sent anywhere.

Count any span in three steps

First, decide which endpoints count: deadlines and tenures usually run exclusive (difference), while stays and rentals run inclusive (difference plus one). Naming the rule kills the classic off-by-one.

Second, enter both dates in Duration mode and read all three rows — exclusive days for math, inclusive days for bookings, weeks for planning. Third, cross-check month-boundary cases against a calendar once; after that, trust the tool.

Month lengths, leap years and deadlines

Months refuse uniformity: adding one month to Jan 31 lands on Feb 28 (or 29), and adding 30 days is a different operation from adding one month. For deadlines, month arithmetic matches how contracts and billing actually read; for shipping estimates, day counts are clearer.

Leap days join spans that cross them automatically — a Feb 27 to Mar 2 window holds 4 days in leap years, 3 otherwise. Birthday edge cases (Feb 29 births) resolve to Feb 28 or Mar 1 by local convention; pick one and note it.

Business days without a headache

No calendar tool here counts working days directly, so do the honest two-step: take the calendar-day duration, peel off full weeks at 5 business days each, then walk the leftover days skipping weekends. A 10-day span starting Monday holds 8 business days; starting Friday it holds 6.

Subtract public holidays individually — they vary by country, state and company, which is exactly why no honest tool hardcodes them. For recurring schedules, compute one clean week and multiply rather than re-counting every cycle.

Ages, tenure and milestones

Age math stacks full years, then full months since the last birthday, then remaining days — the format HR systems, insurers and milestone trackers expect. Tenure works identically from a start date to today or to any end date.

For countdowns and deadlines, Add/Subtract mode projects forward and backward with the same calendar-clamped arithmetic: 12 weeks before a launch, 30 days after an invoice, 18 months of vesting. Set the direction first — one date in, one date out, no ambiguity.

Frequently asked questions

Should I count the start date, the end date, or both?

It depends on the question: durations between dates exclude the end (a Monday-to-Monday span is 7 days), while rental and booking counts include both endpoints. The Date Calculator shows exclusive days, inclusive days and weeks together so you pick the right row instead of guessing.

How do leap years affect the count?

February 29 counts like any other day when it falls inside your span. Month arithmetic clamps instead: Jan 31 plus one month lands on Feb 28 (or 29 in a leap year), since February 31 does not exist.

Can I count business days only?

Take the calendar-day result and subtract weekends: divide total days into full weeks (5 business days each) plus the leftover days, skipping any that fall on Saturday or Sunday, then subtract public holidays by hand. It is two minutes of arithmetic and stays exact.

How is age in years, months and days computed?

Full years first, then full months from the last birthday, then leftover days — with month ends clamped the same honest way. Enter the birth date in the Age Calculator and optionally a second date to get the age at any point in time, not just today.
